"Extra....Life....Circuit!" Ryan Allen, Dan Nixon, and John Nelson

This week, Chad and Jeff are chatting with three musicians from three different bands. Even though each band, Extra Arms, Big Life, and Speed Circuit, share a similarity: i.e., they all have Ryan Allen as a member! Ryan Allen is the lead singer and songwriter from Extra Arms, Dan Nixon is the lead singer from Big Life, and John Nelson is the lead singer/guitarist from Speed Circuit. We're talking about a whole slew of topics, particularly the fact that all three of these bands recently released new music and are currently gigging around the local music scene whenever possible! Also covered are smartphones, mellow yellow, and a little bit about how Chad recently joined ECK!

Linda Ann Jordan - Pretty Island

Linda Ann Jordan has a new band! More on that, in a sec, but meanwhile: Chad and Jeff welcomed Linda Ann Jordan to the bar to chat about her origins as a songwriter, poet, and also visual artist (watercolor paintings!). Linda was in a fantastic lo-fi indie-rock group known as Best Exes during a good chunk of the latter 2010s, but she's been a fan and ardent supporter of the local music scene for years, including helping to coordinate several large-scale live music events, notably for nonprofits like the Seraphine Collective!

ALSO: Linda also has a new band called Pretty Island, which grew out of her flurry of songwriting from the last five years, featuring Lauren Milia and Dina Bankole! They are playing their first show Sunday night at the Polka Dot bar in Hamtramck, with Fred Thomas!

Nick Schillace - "Ya Gotta Have A Good Instrument"

This week, Chad and Jeff actually recorded an interview OUTSIDE of the bar... We were still indoors, though, so to speak. We were down in Chad's basement when virtuosic guitarist and music educator Nick Schillace stopped by to talk about finger-picking guitar styles and the nuances of the acoustic guitar, as an instrument. We talked about the blues, bluegrass, and "folk," and we also talked about Nick's most recent album, A Rich Boy's Measured Blues, as well as his other projects, like Lac La Belle (with Jennie Knaggs) and the Post Imperial Jazz Band!

Deleano Acevedo from Mango Star!

This week, Chad and Jeff welcome Deleano Acevedo from the dream-pop quintet Mango Star, to talk about, among other things, ambient music, production, serendipity, and more! Mango Star have recently released their second album, Totally Normal, following up their debut, Wasted Daydream. The hosts get awfully nostalgic, in the best way, with Delenao, since they've all been running around this music scene for quite a while.

Ryan Dillaha - "That Certainly IS a Reference to Walt Whitman!"

This week, Chad and Jeff welcome an esteemed and established songwriter, wordsmith and guitarist, Ryan Dillaha, joining us to talk about his several solo albums and various other projects (like The Miracle Men) and musical adventures (gigging in bars, house-shows, and what-not). Dillaha comes from a working-class family, tying back to the River Rouge Steel Plant, and while he's able to riff with the best of the bar-side riff-raff, he's also a certified person of letters, a scholar, a teacher, a poet. And his voice just might break your heart. 

 

 

Lauren Mercury - "Emphasis on the PARTY"

Chad and Jeff welcome Lauren Mercury into the bar to chat about two of the unique bands that she plays in, including the Detroit Party Marching Band and Troy Gregory & the Mercury Gauntlett! So we're talking about "crashing" marching bands, we're talking about parties, we're talking about prog-rock, we're talking about the Beatles, and we're talking about the FLUTE! And so much more, because Lauren Mercury is not only a musician, but also such an ardent supporter of local music!

CHECKER - "BFFR"

This week, at the Outer Limits Lounge, Chad and Jeff welcomed Cinquex and McKenna of the rock duo CHECKER. McKenna plays drums and sings lead vocals, while Cinquex is on guitar and backing vocals. The energetic pair of musicians share their excitement for music, as well as several entertaining tangents about movies, golf, Sigourney Weaver, and more!
